Painted Bread Marketing and AI Usage

Painted Bread Marketing has been investigating and following AI very closely for the past couple of months. It is fascinating what ChatGPT, Bard, and others can do!  It also has a number of implications for marketing professionals and businesses conducting marketing, and those working with marketing firms.


I am a steadfast believer that some things just can't be AI-generated, especially when it comes to creating content that is meant to differentiate companies from their competitors. It takes a human (me) to decipher through clients' information to come up with compelling messaging. Could AI do it? Sure, but that's not my style. 


This manifesto is meant to codify our responsible AI principles at Painted Bread Marketing and a 100% commitment to using AI in an ethical way.


Our Responsible AI Principles*

  1. We believe in the responsible design, development, deployment, and operation of AI technologies.
  2. We believe in a human-centered approach to AI that empowers and augments professionals. AI technologies should be assistive, not autonomous. 
  3. We believe that humans remain accountable for all decisions and actions, even when assisted by AI. The human must remain in the loop in all AI applications. 
  4. We believe in the critical role of human knowledge, experience, emotion, and imagination in creativity, and we seek to promote original creation and thought at all times.
  5. We believe in the power of language, images, and videos to educate, influence, and affect change. We commit to never knowingly using generative AI technology to deceive; to produce content for the sole benefit of financial gain; or to spread falsehoods, misinformation, disinformation, or propaganda. 
  6. We believe in understanding the limitations and dangers of AI and considering those factors in all of our decisions and actions. 
  7. We believe that transparency in data collection and AI usage is essential in order to maintain the trust of clients and stakeholders.
  8. We believe in personalization without invasion of privacy, including strict adherence to data privacy laws, mitigation of privacy risks for consumers, and following our moral compass when legal precedent lags behind AI innovation. 
  9. We believe in intelligent automation without dehumanization, and the potential of AI to have profound benefits for humanity and society.
  10. We believe in an open approach to sharing  AI research, knowledge, ideas, experiences, and processes in order to advance the industry and society.
  11. We believe in the importance of up-skilling and re-skilling professionals, and using AI to build more fulfilling careers and lives.
  12. We believe in partnering with organizations and people who share our principles. 


How We May Use AI 

While we are constantly experimenting with AI technologies to drive efficiency and performance across business functions, we may use a collection of generative AI for marketing for output such as: 

  • Speech-to-text transcription
  • Content summarization
  • Outline generation
  • Image generation 
  • Ideation


When working with Painted Bread Marketing you can be confident that content created for clients is authentic and contains original thought by Painted Bread Marketing. An AI tool may be used to generate an idea or provide context, but the final output for websites and other marketing collateral will meet U.S. copyright laws. 

AI-generated Content and U.S. Copyright Laws

The US Copyright Office declared in March that content that is AI-generated cannot be copyrighted.So, if you use any AI tool to generate a website or social media posts, or a blog, you cannot claim it as your own or use the (c) copyright symbol.


This is why Painted Bread is committed to providing original content. And, when any subcontractors are involved, we will ensure that their contribution will be original as well. You can then be confident in including copyright on your website or other materials. 

A word of caution (a suggestion really)

If you are working with an outside firm for any of your marketing needs (copywriting, graphic design, website development, etc.), remember that they must disclose if they are using AI to generate output. It is always good practice to confirm with external - and even internal - resources.
